The JUA and PCF provide specified levels of risk management services to its member insureds. These programs include the following:
NEW PHYSICIAN AND DENTAL PROGRAM
This program focuses on risk management education for new physicians and dentists. The program is presented twice a year, in collaboration with the South Carolina Medical Association and Marsh USA, Inc. It features quality content, handout materials, and speakers from the JUA/PCF, medical profession, and legal profession. Key learning objectives are:
- Common causes of medical malpractice
- Prevention strategies to avoid medical malpractice
- Communication with patients and risk management
- Record management
- Addressing adverse outcomes
- The role of the JUA/PCF and State Board of Medical Examiners in risk management
Newly licensed physicians and dentists can obtain a 25% discount on their first year premium up to a maximum of $2,000 for successfully completing the risk management program.
HEALTHCARE PRACTICE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
The JUA and PCF have made significant advances in post-event claims management. The importance of timely claims reporting cannot be underestimated nor can pre-event risk management. Our program focuses on specific on-site loss prevention surveys and risk assessments. Objectives are to:
- Reduce the costs of claims by reducing both the frequency and severity of claims
- Enhance member relationship by adding valued service and visibility in the medical community
- Reinforce the process for reporting patient events/claims
- Increase awareness of risk behaviors
- Improve documentation of records
This program is a collaborative effort between the JUA/PCF, the South Carolina Medical Association, and Marsh USA, Inc.
HEALTHCARE FACILITY RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The JUA/PCF works in collaboration with the South Carolina Hospital Association in identifying risk management issues and assisting facilities in their resolution. This program focuses on providing consultative risk management services for JUA/PCF healthcare facilities by providing educational/consultative services. Types of policies and procedures that are reviewed include:
- Documentation of medical records
- Information flow
- Appointment and scheduling procedures
- Duties and responsibilities
- Electronic communications
- Storage and distribution systems
- Fire and safety
